Glossary of tiling terms
BOTTLE KILN — large type of intermittent kiln, usually coal-fired, formerly used in the large scale production of pottery and tiles. Characterized by its unique design, a bottle kiln consists of an inner kiln encased within a tall brick structure resembling a bottle in shape. These kilns played a significant role in the historical production of ceramic wares, including tiles, providing the necessary firing process for their creation.
