Glossary of tiling terms
CLASSIC TECHNIQUE — refers to a mosaic technique that originated during the Classical period, spanning from the fall of the last Athenian tyrant in 510 BC to the death of Alexander the Great in 323 BC.
This technique primarily involves the use of pebbles to create mosaics on the floor. Notable examples of this technique can be found in Pella, the capital of Macedonia, as well as in Sicyon, in the northern Peloponnesus, and Olynthus, that is present-day Chalcidice in Greece. Specimens from Eretria, Vergina, and Apollonia in Illyria showcase a more refined and intricate gradation of colour, demonstrating the advancement of this technique during that time.
