Glossary of tiling terms
COCCIOPESTO — is an inert material that is mixed with lime to produce a red-coloured material. Pounded cocciopesto can be used to make ceramic floors, sometimes decorated with tesserae (also known as opus signinum).
It is one of the oldest building materials know from ancient Rome and is a form of Roman concrete (opus caementicium). However, unlike opus caementicium it is waterproof, the reason for its widespread use in Roman baths, aqueducts and cisterns.
