Glossary of tiling terms
DELFTWARE — refers to a type of ceramic tile that undergoes a distinctive production process. At the biscuit stage, the tile is dipped in white tin glaze and subsequently adorned by hand-painted decoration. This form of decoration, known as 'in-glaze,' becomes embedded within the glaze during the second firing.
The name originates from the Dutch town of Delft and is commonly associated with tin-glazed tiles manufactured in the Netherlands and Britain. Delftware tiles exhibit exquisite craftsmanship and often feature intricate designs, including landscapes, floral patterns, and pictorial scenes. The combination of the white tin glaze and hand-painted elements imparts a charming and timeless character to these tiles.
