Glossary of tiling terms

Lithography — Lithography is a surface printing method that relies on the interaction between grease and water.

The process involves creating a design using greasy ink or crayon on a porous stone that readily absorbs water. The stone is moistened, and then ink is rolled onto it. The greasy part attracts the ink while the wet stone repels it. To transfer the design onto tiles, the image is then transferred onto a sheet of paper or a rubber medium, which is then used for applying the design onto the tiles.

Lithography revolutionized tile production in the 19th century, enabling the mass production of high-quality multi-coloured tiles. In modern times, lithography has evolved with the advent of digital technology, but the basic principles remain the same.
