Glossary of tiling terms

Manganese — metallic element widely used in the production of ceramic glazes. When manganese oxide is combined with other materials and applied to tin-glazed tiles, it produces a distinctive purple glaze.

The purple glaze created by manganese oxide can vary in shade, ranging from deep violet to rich plum tones. It adds a captivating touch to the surface of tiles, lending them a unique and vibrant appearance. The use of manganese glazes on tin-glazed tiles became particularly popular during the Dutch and English ceramic traditions.
