muffle kiln —  type of kiln specifically designed for low-temperature firing processes. It features an interior chamber that is completely enclosed and separated from the main kiln area. The purpose of this design is to protect the ware being fired from direct exposure to flames and combustion gases.

The muffle chamber acts as a shield, providing a controlled environment for the firing process. It prevents direct contact between the ware and the flames, reducing the risk of overheating or damage to delicate or sensitive materials. The separation also helps to maintain a more consistent and uniform temperature within the muffle, ensuring even heat distribution and controlled firing conditions.

This type of kiln is commonly used for processes that require lower firing temperatures, such as enamel work, delicate ceramics, or certain types of glazing. By isolating the ware in the muffle chamber, the desired effects can be achieved without subjecting the objects to the intense heat of the main kiln.
