Glossary of tiling terms

Relief — raised decoration that is moulded onto the surface of a tile. It is a technique commonly used in tile production to add texture and visual interest to the tile's surface.

The relief design is created by shaping or pressing the clay into a mould that has the desired pattern or image. The excess clay is then trimmed or scraped away, leaving behind the raised design. This technique allows for intricate and detailed designs to be reproduced on the tile's surface.

Relief can range from subtle, low-relief designs with minimal depth to high-relief designs that create a more pronounced three-dimensional effect. The raised areas of the relief can cast shadows, enhancing the overall visual appeal of the tile. Relief is often used in decorative tiling applications, such as in wall panels, friezes, and ornamental elements, to add depth and dimension to the surface and create a visually captivating effect.
