Glossary of tiling terms
saggar — container made of fireclay used to protect pottery and tiles during the firing process in a kiln. It is designed to shield the pieces from direct contact with the kiln gases, ensuring that they are not affected by impurities or atmospheric elements that could alter their appearance or damage them.
The pottery or tiles are placed inside the saggar, which acts as a protective enclosure. This helps maintain a controlled environment around the pieces, shielding them from the direct flames, ash, and gases inside the kiln. The saggar is carefully sealed to prevent any external factors from entering and affecting the pieces.
By using a saggar, the potter or tile maker can ensure that their creations are fired in a controlled and protected environment, resulting in consistent and desired outcomes in terms of colour, texture, and overall quality.
