Glossary of tiling terms

stencil — tool used in tile decoration. It typically consists of a piece of paper, card, or metal with a design or pattern cut out of it. The areas that are cut out allow for the application of colour or paint onto a surface.

In tile decoration, stencils are commonly used to create precise and repetitive designs. The stencil is placed on the surface of the ceramic object or tile, and colour or glaze is applied through the cutaway areas using a brush, sponge, or spray.

Stencils offer a convenient way to achieve consistent and intricate designs with ease. They can be used to create patterns, shapes, or even text on the surface of tiles. By carefully positioning and aligning the stencil, artists and craftsmen can produce detailed and professional-looking decorations.
