Imbrex — Latin word for a curved Roman roof tile which fitted over the raised flanges of tegulae.
In-glaze — Decoration painted on to an unfired tin-glazed surface. During the firing the decoration sinks into the tin glaze and fuses with it.
INCASTRO — Incastro means that two mosaic sheets can't be properly detached or don't meet perfectly because section line and interruption are wrong.
INDIRECT METHOD — Also called the reverse method, it is used when it is necessary to achieve a perfectly smooth, flat surface - for example, on floors. The tesserae are stuck face down on brown paper before being laid onto the base.
Inlaid — A type of design formed by inserting different coloured clays into the surface of the tile (see ENCAUSTIC).
INLAY — Decorative technique in which different pieces of marble (or wood) are attached to a support according to the desired pattern.
Intaglio — relief in reverse or design stamped into the surface.
Intermittent kiln — A kiln in which the ware is set, fired, cooled and then drawn.
INTERSTICE — Space between tesserae.
